Snelling Lecture 2017

Joan Bakewell: We Need to Talk About Death

Thursday 9 November at 7.30 pm – tickets £15

A talk by Joan Bakewell based around a 2016 BBC Radio 4 series of the same name, in which Joan Bakewell and her panel talked openly about what happens in Britain today when we die.

Mortality is often on Joan Bakewell’s mind.  She’s in her eighties, many of her friends have died and older relatives went long ago.  She’s seen others die and doesn’t find it frightening.  Given that death and dying are just part of the stream of human existence, she’s baffled that so many of us shy away from the subject.  In the lecture she will explore the choices open to us and confront the very questions about death and dying that we fear the most.

After the lecture, books will be available to buy and Joan Bakewell will be happy to sign them.

Tickets are on sale online at (booking fee applies) or by postal application to Oxted United Reformed Church, 21 Bluehouse Lane, Oxted, RH8 OAA (cheques to Oxted URC, please include s.a.e) or in person at the Church on Tuesday mornings from 10 October, 10.00-11.30 am.  Any profit from the lecture will go to The Brigitte Trust, a charity operating in Surrey and West Sussex, which offers support for people facing life-threatening illness

The Snelling Lecture is sponsored by Oxted United Reformed Church.
